St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church

St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church is located at 296 East Dibble Street, Marcellus, Cass, MI 49067. It currently is a mission church of St. John Bosco Catholic Church in Mattawan, MI and has about 100 families.


The church published a "25th Anniversary" booklet in 1976 (click on the link for a transcription of the "25th Anniversary" booklet) and a "50th Anniversary" booklet in 2001.


1. Rev. George Zabelkato 21 July 1958

2. Rev. Anthony Wade (21 July 1958 to 07 March 1960). The Reverend Anthony Wade, Pastor of St. Margaret Mary Church, took up his duties as pastor of St. Mary's Church, Paw Paw March 7. Rev. Wade came to St. Margaret Mary Church July 21, 1958 to succeed Rev. George Zabelka, its first pastor. In August 1957, he transferred his residence from Marcellus to Mattawan to open the parochial grade school there. He continued to care for the spiritual needs of both St. John Bosco Church in Mattawan and St. Margaret Mary in Marcellus. He will be succeeded by the Reverend Leo Zabatsky (sic), who is presently pastor of St. Joseph Church in Gaines, Michigan.

Celebrate Tenth Anniversary of Parish

(From the 21 December 1961 issue of the Marcellus News) 


  "St. Margaret Mary Altar Society entertained at a buffet supper in honor of the tenth anniversary of thte parish, Tuesday evening, December 12 (1961). Guests included members of the parish as well as many former members who hve moved away from Marcellus.


  Following the dinner, a short program took place. Speakers were Rev. Father Schmidt, the pastor; Rev. Father Wade; and Rev. Father Zabelka, who showed movies he had taken when the parish was first organized. A short history of the parish was given by Mrs. U.M. Adams. Charter members of the Altar Society were presented with silver dollar corsages. The evening ended with the renewing of friendships and remembering the good times they have had at St. Margaret Mary Parish."


Maxine L. (Balog) Burleigh Obituary

Maxine L. Burleigh, age 74, of Marcellus, passed away Tuesday afternoon, July 20, 2010 in Riverview Manor, Three Rivers, following a long illness.

Maxine was born March 15, 1936 in Port Huron, the daughter of John F. and E. Rowenna (Goff) Balog. On June 25, 1955 in Marcellus she married Alfred E. Burleigh, Jr. who preceded her in death on February 4, 2001.

She had lived most of her life in Marcellus and graduated from Marcellus High School in 1955. From 1967 to 1985 she and her husband owned and operated Burleigh's South Side Grocery. She was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She taught religious education for 45 years at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Cathy (Dennis) Small of Marcellus; three sons, James (Lucy) Burleigh of Reading, Pennsylvania, Michael Burleigh of Marcellus and Gregory (Nina) Burleigh of Marcellus; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elsie Moore of Three Rivers and Sister Rosemary Balog of Nazareth; two brothers, John (Lorinda) Balog of Glasco, Kansas and Gerald Balog of Peru, Indiana; one brother-in-law, Robert Swihart of Mendon and several nieces and nephews.

Two sisters and two brothers preceded her in death.

Funeral Mass was celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 23, 2010 in St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church with Father Matthew Illikattil celebrant.

Burial followed in Marcellus Cemetery.

The family received friends 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday in the Mater Funeral Home. A rosary service was held at 8:00 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
