William A. "Buck" Knapp

William A. "Buck" Knapp April 5, 1920 - November 20, 2011 William A. "Buck" Knapp passed away peacefully surrounded by family on November 20, 2011. Buck was born on April 5, 1920 to John Gilbert Knapp and Stella Ann Welch Knapp, in a farm house in Caddo County, Oklahoma. Three years later, during the dust bowl years of the 1920's, John and Stella packed up all their belongings and took off west to California in a Model "A" Ford with the rumble seat modified so that Buck could have a bed to sleep in on the trip to California. They settled in Compton, California where Buck grew up and attended Willowbrook Elementary School and Junior High and graduated from Compton High School. He attended Compton Junior College and was on his way to the University of Nevada on a football scholarship when World War II intervened. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942 and was eventually stationed in Aberdeen, Washington where he met Frances Lytle. It was love-at-first-sight. They were married in 1943 and after his honorable discharge in 1945, they returned to Compton, California. Buck started working for Union Oil after his discharge from the Navy, and eventually landed a job with Bethlehem Supply Company, an oilfield supply company. After many assignments, they transferred him to the Bakersfield store. He was store manager and supervisor with Bethlehem and its successor, Continental Emsco Company, until his retirement. He was a gifted athlete who excelled in any sport that he attempted. He played in any league that was available whether it was baseball, softball, bowling, or basketball. He was active in church activities when we were growing up and coached our various sports teams. He spearheaded our vacation trips every summer and taught us how to fish and enjoy the outdoors. Dad was a fifty year member of Bakersfield Country Club and actively participated in all facets of the club. He is a past president of Bakersfield Country Club and was a permanent fixture on the planning committees of many of the tournaments that take place there every year. His best and dearest friends have been members there, past and present. He is a life member of the American Petroleum Institute having participated in the activities of that organization until his retirement. William A."Buck" Knapp is survived by his son, William Duane Knapp and daughter-in-law, Sharon; daughter, Barbara Townsend and son-in-law Ernie Townsend; grandson Joshua Townsend and his wife Lauren and great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Addison and William ; granddaughter Olivia Knapp and great-granddaughter, Scarlett; sister, Gloria Ann Agnew and brother-in-law, Fred; nephew John Agnew; and nieces Janice Williams and Jane Bledsoe. William A. "Buck" Knapp was preceded in death by his parents John and Stella Knapp, his wife Frances Eunice Lytle Knapp, and his second wife Barbara Miller Knapp. We would like to thank the staff at Glenwood Gardens and Hoffman Hospice for the kind and loving care that they gave to Buck. In keeping with Buck's request, a memorial service will not be held. Instead we invite all of Buck's many friends to attend a Celebration of his life on Saturday, November 26, 2011 at 12 noon at Bakersfield Country Club. Please come to share your remembrances and stories of his life.
