Cass County, Michigan government website
From the Marcellus News, 12 July 1923: "Thos. W. Sines of Dowagiac has just put out a useful 166 page book of Cass County history. It states the first settlers of Marcellus Township were Delevan Duncan and Joe Clark in 1835, followed the next year by Joel and John Goff, John Huyck, Josephus Gard, Joseph Haight and then many more started to come. Joseph Haight is said to have built the first log cabin in 1836. Joseph Bair came in 1837 and built what his wife called her "Elm Log Cabin". He then built the first sawmill in 1844. John Huyck set out the first orchard in 1837. The first marriage was Wm. Wolfe to Miss P. Goff in 1840. The township was organized March 9, 1843 and the first meeting was held at the home of D.G. Rouse, who was elected supervisor."
